I would definatly look into Iguanas as there are plenty in need of a good home that are stuck in shelters/rescues around the UK, and they do have a tendency to warm up to handling with a bit of time and patients. Monitors can be more of a sneak an peak but don't touch type of lizard at the best of times, tree monitors are much better suited to the advance from what information that i have gathered as they dont always do very well in the captive enviroment. |

you are totally right iguanas make great pets! thats why there are so many at reptile rescues. and not just in england, EVERYWHERE. because they seem like a good idea to people who are first getting into animals. they are small, cheap, and are told that they are generally easy to care for. when in fact, they arent. iguanas hit about 5 feet long easily. where as there are a lot of monitor species that max out at 2 and a half. i never brought up varanus exanthematicus because i dont think they make great pets for everyone. due to their size, sometimes aggressiveness, and husbandry requirements i dont recomend them at all. i have kept iguanas and about 12 different species of varanids from small ackies to large crocodile monitors, also about 30-40 other species of lizard alone. you do have to remember that there IS a reason why iguanas are looked at as problematic in the pet trade and are the most frequently dumped reptile out there. but then again, maybe the numbers lie. That IS the reason why there are so many rescue center's with Igs, people are miss informed and the animal suffers. Also most are wild caught, and I'm sure your aware most WC reptiles don't make the best pets. It actually suprise's me how well most "tame". At the end of the day you can not blame the animal for being miss sold.
As for the thread starter, your going to find almost all large arboreal lizards are of the look but don't touch variety
There is one that springs to mind though, have you considered an Ozzy water dragon? |

Dude im not saying that... but iggys were being bought by the shed load 10-20 years ago and more [the ones in the rescue centres are mainly 3-12 years old] fast forward a few years and they may very well be full of Varanids.
The guy asked for a big lizard.. presuamably he knows what he wants and i think green iggys fit in there.. and yeh one less in a rescue centre...damn right. _________________ Beardies
