Well there are quite a few reasons. If we're talking about the "majority" where large commercial businesses are concerned they are probably in it mainly because exotics are growing in popularity - this means a good amount of buyers.
Other reasons could be because of their love for herps, because they wish to study and research their behaviour in captivity or to improve their lines.
But, i think if we're talking about highly commercial businesses like you said, the first point is probably a major one. _________________ -Matt

Everybody starts off keeping and breeding reptiles as a hobby, when they get to a stage to make a living from it, then why not make a business out of it. Better to have a job that you actually enjoy! _________________ www.Reptilebreeder.co.uk

What are the reasons why commercial businesses choose to keep and breed for sale exotic pets.
The MAIN reason a COMMERCIAL business chooses to keep & breed a species will be because they believe it has a commercial value to their business.
Sure there will be a few commercial breeders that work with a couple of species because they are favorites or a challenge. Just remember that there is probably less than 6 FULL TIME commercial breeders that rely on breeding reptiles for a living (many more shops do breed some of their own stock but NONE that are 100% dependant on that).
The vast majority of captive bred reptiles are from private hobbyists. _________________

Hi,
I can only speak for myself here but my reasons for breeding have changed over the years as my collection has changed.
In the beginning it was for the sheer joy of breeding some Cornsnakes, Leopard Geckos or Bearded Dragons. The feeling that you get from raising an animal from a baby to adult hood is rewarding, when that animal produces babies of its own it is even more pleasing.
As my collection grew in both size and diversity my feeding bills, vets bills, equipment costs etc etc etc all increased too. Breeding my animals became a way in which i could supplement my, expensive, hobby. I think very few people actually make a profit out of breeding reptiles. If you can cover your costs i think you are doing well!!!! Even then, i would say very few people achieve this.
Only a very large sum of money could make all the blood, sweat and tears seem worthwhile!!!! You have to do it first and foremost for the love of the animals, any financial gain is a bonus and as i say, helps pay for the upkeep of our charges. _________________ Fraser Gilchrist
