My children have found some sloworms, and we would like to study them for a while.
I realize they are protected in the UK, and have read up on the law. Im not going to harm, kill, or sell them, and would appreciate any advise on their care.
At present, I have them in a large enclosure, set up for skinks.
If I find I cannot care correctly for them, I will return them to the wild ASAP. Thanks for reading!

What you've done could be illegal. Watching them in the wild is OK but you've taken them from there natural habitat where they are safe. You could ring the RSPCA and ask them if it's OK to do what you're doing.

Its not illegal to catch and keep slow worms, although technically you do need the landowners permission.

To feed them, you can try any of the usual feeder insects, i.e. crickets, mealworms, waxworms etc. You could also try earthworms, white slugs or small snails.

You will need a basking light creating temps of around 85 or 90 degrees F, but a cooler and damper area with moss, preferably in the 60's F.

If it were me, I'd keep them for a few weeks only, then release them where I found them. If they are adults, it might be best to release them anyway, as they will be mating in the wild soon.

Thank you for info on feeding guys! As I said before, I am fully aware of the law, and restrictions, and know I have not broken any wildlife laws, so as long as the sloworms feed well, I shall keep them, no longer than a few weeks, just enough time for us to study them, then wel release them where they came from. The land we found them on, belongs to us also.
Q. Ive heard that the sloworm is actually a legless lizard, and I can sometimes make out where the leg buds were, is the sloworm related to skinks, as I can see a similarity between them both.

Go out early in the morning and catch white slugs in the wet grass. They love these!

Or release them back so they can feed themselves Very Happy

if they were found in the UK... they're not gonna need a heated viv, and basking light and stuff...

they wouldn't get those temps in their natural habitat.. cuz it's really cold outside!

IMO, you'll be fine with them for a couple of weeks, to learn more about them.... then release them back where you found them Smile
