Today was my big spring clean out of my four foot tiger sal viv-it was getting a bit soggy and the plants were dying, so had to remedy that. I dug the top six or so inches of compost out, and replaced with up to eight inches of peat in some places.
This was a good chance to remedy my mistakes, and opted to resculpt the viv in an almost identical way to how I had done before, only keeping it a lot simpler. I removed the plants, leaving just their caves and a thick layer of peat. I then put a few moss patches around the place for cover and moisture. They also have their deep pool still, so I am not worried about them drying out.

This ALSO gave me an oppertunity to photograph each one as I put it back in the new set up-so here we go!

largest male "tom"

smallest male (and indeed sallest sal) "tiny"

Largest female (and largest overall) "tilly"

Smallest female, but second largest overall "eugoogley", my first ever amphibian!!!

These pictures dont really do them justice, but give an indication on the size of them all relative to my hand!

Set up is a four foot fishtak with deep drainage and peat layers for burrowing. On top of this are a couple of caves which they enjoy spending time under. There is a 15" by 8" by 8" fishtank buried into the substrate, which provides a large pool for them to swim in, which they do occasionally (a lot more frequently upon raising humidity)
I house all four in this set up, and they get on happily. They come out to see me and get fed, but sometimes burrow away for weeks at a time-they always turn up happy and healthy though. Charming salamanders, and an excellent introduction to the world of amphibians.

Here are a few more snaps taken while I had them in a temp box while I cleaned:

And one of tilly and tiny in the pool after being put back in the tank-i find when stressed they will run to the water for safety. They will often spend time in the water when not stressed though, which is good!
