Managed to obtain some lovely wee African Pygmy hedgehogs, 1.2.

They have been handled a lot as they are very tame and tollerate a lot of handling and will feed readily out of your hand.

These hogs certainly win hands down on the cute factor scale!

Unfortunately my camera batteries ran out, so only a few pics and not the whole group. I will post some more pics if anyone's interested.

Yes they are way cute splendid lil faces! When you stroke their noses they wrinkle them up like Persian slippers going in reverse!

Housing is dead simple, I have my trio in a large homebase tuff crate (£5.99) 2ftx17"x10". I have used repti bark as substrate. Made a hide for them out of a cardboard box, upended with a doorway cut in it, filled with nice dust extracted barley straw. I have fixed a large rabbit water drip drinking bottle at one end of the crate. I also as a treat give a saucer of milk now and then.

I feed them most insects , they love mealworms! Dust the foodstuff a couple of times per week. Also feed dry cat food, a complete dry food biscuit type things, helps keep their teeth down! Also now and then will feed them meaty type dog or cat food. Do not overfeed them though they put wight on easily and are better kept on the lean side, not starved of course, but a fit healthy weight.

They live in a warm room and are of course active at night.

They could be kept in a large guinea pig cage or indoor rabbit cage. The best sort are those with deep plastic bases and wire frame tops. Watch out for baby hogs escaping out of the wire frames.

Ailurus; I cant remember what I paid for them now, they come from fresh European bloodlines. Which is way good as there is a strong need for fresh hog blood within the UK hog world at the moment! I have seen them for sale over here for approx £80-£150 for a baby and more for a breeding adult. But the average price if buying more than one is £100 a go! Be carefull if buying adults advertised as breeders, check the age of the females as if past four, they may not be productive, but saying that being past four does not mean they wont be productive either, hope that makes sense.

Shall do some more piccies later! Thanks everyone for showing an interest. Very Happy

Their faces don't look quite right for normal African Pygmy Hedgehogs...
Could they be Long Eared Hedgehogs, Hemiechinus auritus?
