For that amount the housing is spot on. I buy bran in bulk bags. But again for that any amount any supermarket, Jordans bran. Either wheat or oat bran. _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

Right I'm up and running with bout 20 buggers in there, when shall i put the ice cream tub full of peat in there they are mediums at the moment but growing rapid? one i have seen the laying occur i put them in the spare 'playhouse' at 28 degrees and just wait for them to hatch? do i have to spray the peat or just leave it at its natural moisture?
thanks again! once I've cracked this I'm moving onto roaches _________________ Just a collector/lover for now |

Once adults(winged) they mature after about a week, they will then start mating, then you can add an egg laying site (before then it's not serving a purpose). _________________

Hello mate. Once they have turned into adults, they will have a pinkish tinge to them, after a week or so more , if kept hot and dry, the pink will fade and you will notice that the slightly longer bodied females dull down to a wheaten colour, whilst the shorter bodied males abdomen`s turn bright yellow. It will at this stage become obvious as you will see the males riding around on the females.
Now`s the time to put in your egg laying tubs . You will see the females laying before long. It takes around 10 - 12 days for them to hatch , so as long as you wip the box out before then and put in another bin all will be fine. That way you get to have the different sizes seperated for ease of use.
As long as the laying medium is damp enough, (I now use a half/half mix of peat or compost and vermiculite as it holds the moisture for longer) you will get nymphs hatching in batches. I find locusts the easiest of all insects to culture now. If it dries right out then take the tub out of the bin and give it a light spray but not too much. It only has to be slightly damp. Have fun _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD

Just an update guys, trying to get all my posting done in one sitting as Internet access is limited at the moment!
All of the locusts bred, I waited few days until all the females have done their thing and have now moved the tub to a separate tank with heatmat underneath, gave the soil a little spray and fed my bosc all the adults! now the waiting game. How long do you reckon guys? _________________ Just a collector/lover for now |
