If they are under a hide, pull it off and quickly take the picture?

I prefer to put them in a hide, focus on around the hide area, and then take photos as you take the hide off.

Place them where you want to take a photo and place your whole hand over them for a minute or two, just like a hide. When they have settled down and are keeping still, be ready with your camera and take your hand off. Occassionally I will hold a snake a few inches down to get a quick snap of head to neck area - or ask someone else to, Ive done this today and will post the results later or tomorrow.
Its definately easier with someone helping. If they are lively then I tend to put them back as I dont want to get them stressed by constantly moving them to where I want them.
Sometimes I will set up a viv to look a certain way, with the snake in a hide, then remove the hide.

i think royals make it so easy, as they dont move that much, then you come to corns and jeez, can they move, specially the smaller ones. but i think you are right, it would be easier with someone helping. mine are just like 'oh am out i will have a wee wander over here'. and they usually try to get down the back of something!!!!
