We have had our blue tongued skink for about 3 months now and I would estimate that he is about 6 months old. He is doing well, eating well and growing but the only problem is that he is constantly burrowed under the substrate hiding.
The temps are all fine and he is handled every day. He normally snorts at me a bit when I go to pick him up but then he settles down. He is a Merauke BTS, I don't know if this makes any difference, but I know Northerns are considered to be most tame.
As well as missing seeing him out and about ( he is our only rep who isn't actually nocturnal!) I'm also concerned whether he is getting enough UV.
Any ideas anyone?

Has he got enough hiding places where he can get away from sight and attention ? And besides that it is an skink, skink burrow a lot (most species)
And besides all that I won't handle him every day. picking up is stress full for an reptile. Reptiles don't need human attention like dogs or cats that like human attention. Reptiles will accept handling etc but if they like it.......

Just thought I'd update and say that our BTS hides much less now, I think he has finally decided that we are quite cool! He has 3 hides to choose from and does hide in them alot but will now walk out of them and openly walk between them rather than trying to slide between them keeping himself buried under the substrate - lol!
He is really tame now. I know not all reps like to be handled but Blueys do seem to enjoy it. He sits on our laps and also enjoys having a good explore. He comes out of his hide if he hears us open the door to his viv and the last couple of days he has actually voluntarily climbed out of the viv into my hands. He obviously just needed some time to settle in and decide whether he trusted us. He is growing really fast and is set to move into a 6ft viv this week, a virtual skinky palace. I expect he will hide again for a while until he gets used to it, but we are kind of introducing him to it gradually and have let him have about half an hour a day in it the last couple of days. Is this a good idea, or unnecessary?

personnaly i'd say its unecessary, might be easier for one move rather than lots of small ones, but everyone has there own opinion, if it seems to be working then i can't see a problem in it. Hope he enjoys his new home.
I also have a BTS and he will be upgrading to a larger tank soon as well!! not that he needs it, he has the floor space of the reptile room to explore a few hours each day, he's a proper little forager!
Very Happy
