Does anyone know of any good digital thermometers that are able to measure over 120F? I'd like the temp at my uromastyx's basking spot to be 120-130F, but this is impossible to measure with my current equipment.

Also, his basking rock is usually red hot to the touch - is this acceptable? I'm slightly concerned since I've read so much about the dangers of electrical hot rocks burning lizards.

I'm currently using a 100W tight-beam basking spot lamp about 8 inches above the basking rock, but I also have a 75W daylight spot I can swap it with.

Thanks

Simon

No, red hot is not atall acceptable.
what type of rock is it and how far from the actual face of the basking bulb is it? oh sorry see its 8 inches, well could you make it 10 inches maybe? or cover the rock with a thin piece of cork bark maybe.

as for digi thermometers, theres a few about, many only measure in C rather than F though.
If you can find any in/out types with a probe attached they will measure the temps required usually well up to 160 f, much higher i think.

Thanks for the quick replies. I've ordered one of those temp guns.

Dean, the face of the bulb is 8 inches from the rock face. Not sure what type of rock it is exactly, sort of a yellowy/red sandstoney type affair. Are there any particular types of rock that are more suitable for basking spots then? I've also got some slate available, but I was concerned about it's sharpish edges.

I've only just put the 100W bulb in today, since I wanted to see if I could get Genghis' basking spot up near the 130F mark, so I'll switch back to the 75W bulb I think.

Thanks again

Simon

hi.
no its just the darker coloured the more heat it attracts and holds [as a general rule, its also down to type of rock but im not sure on specifics, sandstone is good to use though, i also use slate but not directly under a bask]
