hi all, i was just wondering. if i was to breed my snakes (I have a male carolina, a female snow, and a female sunglow motley) could i get anything other than hets. i understand genetics and all that, but isd there any chance my male carolina contains a hidden gene, even though the store did not label him as het.... do stores ever do that?, so that the babies would be amel, anery or even somethning else?
thanks _________________ Tom

There's always the possibility that your carolina is het for something and to test out whether this is so I would breed him to the snow, since anery and amel are the two most basic and common hets.
We bred one of our classic females this year and turned out to be het amel, hubby had an incline to this because he thought her belly pattern looked different. Turns out he was right _________________ www.ratsnakefoundation.org |

It depends what you class as "cool" Amel, anery, motley, and hypo are the four genes that seem to turn up unexpectedly - the oldest and most widespread genes. The chances of getting anything else are slim to say the least ...
Most corns seem to be het amel or anery at least, so there's an outside chance for amel/anery/snow in your clutches alongside normal if you mate the male to both females.
Mind you, I took a chance with a normal motley female this year, figuring she might well be het either amel or anery. Mated her to a male who is homozygous amel and het anery - so far eight normals, and with only three left to hatch I doubt there's any morphs in there at all. |
