I've found some juvenile red tegus for sale here in Sweden. The problem is how to sex them accurately. I'm accustomed to probe juvenile snakes, but is this a good method for tegus too?

With baby B&W tegus they are easy to sex by probing, it is a slightly different technique than with snakes but just as reliable.

I have some pictures of sexing baby B&W tegus like this I will try to find them in the next few days.

Are the probing distances similar to that of snakes? (3/4 scales for feamle, 8/10 for male)

Is the theory the same for probing these guys, and how accurate is it?

yep the theory is the same, deeper probing for males than females, the technique is different, but if you are confident at probing small snakes then you should do ok with tegus,

Each species of snake/lizard will probe a different amount, scrubs for instance the females can probe 5 or 6 scales, so it is nearly always useful to compare as you go along, probing a single animal without previous experiance of that species often leads to mis-sexing of animals.

With the tegus you can see from the pictures how far they have probed, and in my experiance of them it is very accurate. Although having allot to sex at the same time does make getting it right allot easier.

Once they get to around a year old they start to show the physical characteristics of sex also.

Thanks for your very instructive pics. Now it won't be difficult to tell the genders apart.
