Hiya,
I have a baby beardie (6 weeks) - got some little crickets that the breeder gave me and picking up more tomorrow but can't wait till then !! ha ha - what size crickets are best to give them and does it matter whether theyre black/brown etc? Found a web site that do mail order live ones - is this bad?
Also what do these sizs mean and when do I change from one to another?
Hatchling approx 200 per tub
1st instar approx 160 per tub
2nd instar approx 140 per tub
3rd instar approx 100 per tub
4th instar approx 100 per tub
Standard approx 75 per tub
Extra Large approx 50 per tub
How long do crickets last?
Questions questions questions!

The size of the crix you feed your beardie shouldnt be bigger than the distance between the dragons eyes.

These are the different sizes and quantities but i get mine from my local petstore and they sell them in small, medium ,large and extra large so im not sure which of these sizes are which. My beardie is only 7 weeks so im quite new to it all aswell. I feed mine small and medium brown and black crix. The only difference ive been able to find out about the crix is the black ones supposed to be slightly harder to digest. You should also feed the crix before feeding them to the dragon, its called gut loading. I feed my crix a couple of dry dog biscuits and a few shavings of carrot peel or apple. You should also dust the crix in calcium supplement powder once a day. I hope some of this helps. I know how you feel theres so many questions. It seems you are about 2/3 weeks behind me. this is my first reptile and i love him!!! If you find out any info please send me an email or something
These are a couple of photos of spike at 5 weeks _________________ Chance favours the prepared mind! |

Hatchling approx 200 per tub - Not needed
1st instar approx 160 per tub - Not needed
2nd instar approx 140 per tub - 1 week to 4 weeks
3rd instar approx 100 per tub - 4 weeks to 10 weeks
4th instar approx 100 per tub - 10 weeks to 16 weeks
Standard approx 75 per tub - Over 16 weeks
Extra Large approx 50 per tub
The above is a rough guide but it all depends how fast your dragon is growing, they can grow a extremely different rates, some achieving adult size in 6 months others taking over a year.
While growing it's good to feed them small amounts as many times a day as you can (a few every hour is good) if that's not practical, then try for at least 3 times a day.
As Jak said, a good prey size guide is the cricket should be no larger than the gap between the eyes. This is more for young dragons, once adult they can handle almost all insect food prey you can offer. _________________
