we have a 8 month ish old albino gecko who until yesterday was doing very very well, this morning we have seen a huge change in her...she is lethargic not interested in food at all...we have since taken her out of her normal viv and put her in a new viv to see how she does.

since she has been in there we have noticed her jaw is not closing properly, she is open mouthed all the time..we thought this might have been the playsand she was on but for the last 5 months she has been fine.she seems to be licking all the time and she is just looking awful, she shed the other day for a few days and she is now flake free of skin.can anyone give any advice at all?i'm worried about her.as like i said before she has been fine and eating well but her jaw just doesn't look right at all.

please someone with geckos, can you help??

Hi. Does her mouth hang open or is she holding it open if you see what I mean?

It could be a number of things. Could you also describe her set up and temps etc as well as her feeding and supplemetation regime please.

I would get her to an exotics vet as soon as possible for an opinion on the cause of the symptoms also. Wink

Theres not much I can surgest atm but if she doesnt eat for a couple of days give her some baby food mixed with crix or waxowmrs or with avipro plus or hydrolife which would help give her some strength and something to help keep her going

Best of luckxxx

It sounds like a calcium deficiency, though it`s difficult to tell without seeing. There will be a vet somewhere near you that works with exotics. Have another look around for one.

Maybe one of the regular vets could give you the number for an exotic vet in your area? Good luck.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

thank's guys for all your help, sadly she died this afternoon and she was booked into vets in the city for a look this afternoon/evening..we're all gutted especially the kids.she was eating fine 3 days ago so its beyond me whats happened.i asked the vets if it was mbd and they said its very much doubtful as the rest of her body was fine, when she was pooing this morning it was all blood and i took this to my local vets she was clear of parasite's and worm..they think her inside's had just shut down for what ever reason.

so it's a sad day in our house, thank's again for all the help.

Sorry you lost your animal. Sad

I lost a female gecko to similar symptoms way back as a lad. It was a calcium deficiency more than likely in my case. I stepped up the amount of supplementation for my females especially after that. So much is used in egg production.

I am not suggesting that it is definately the case in your situation but thought I may as well mention it.

Good luck with any future Herps and please dont let the loss of this animal put you off the hobby. Wink

Regards Peter

Hiya boa stu
As said on rep crazy - Im very sad for your poor gecko.

I would strongly recommend a post mortem as you keep other reptiles and need to check in case its something infectious. With passing blood it could be from trauma - such as a fall, or cancer or from a bowel problem, it could also be from a nasty gastro intestinal infection. Its a good idea to learn what caused it.

Also, you seriously need to locate a vet that can treat your reptiles, before you end up in another situation.
