Well I went out this morning to see if any early Adders were about.
Air Temperature was 9c
Ground temp varied between 15c and 20c.
Bright sunshine but a bitter wind up on top of the north york moors.
No luck yet but it is very early.
I've had males out in early Feb in p[ast years so I'll try again next week. _________________ Live for today as your dead for a long long time

Id love to see an adder in the uk, i did go out for a look last year but didnt see any. Where and when are the best times to go looking.
I live on the edge of the pennines near sheffield, Is that a good place to look or is it unlikely to see any around there.
Where do they tend to hang out?, near trees, open spaces, etc, etc. _________________

Dont know the sheffield area that well but i'll try and find some sites.
I'm also trying to organise at least a couple of field trip for herpers this year.
Probably one in April and one in September.
Might try and do one in the nprth West covering adders and Natterjack toads _________________ Live for today as your dead for a long long time

I get adders all summer outside my shop! We have an outdoor area where we keep all of our fibreglass ponds which heat up real nice when the sun is out. I counted 7 individuals last year ranging from tiny little 9-10" babies to a huge 2ft ish female! I even had to move a female from sitting in front of the door so people could come and go! Beautiful reptiles. Wish there were more of them about. The dunes behind my house normally throw up an adder or two also, I'll try to snap a couple this year _________________ Licking this cane toad was the worst flippin idea you.............whoa man that penguin just put something in your pocket. |

Grrrrr, I miss those little beauties, one of the only drawbacks to living here, on this little rock,(Jersey) perfect habitat, loads of food for them and not one single adder, not even in the fossil record
I am truely jealous.
(we do have some monster grass snakes though )

Awesome! Again a very beautiful snake, I like all of the Natrix snakes. I havn't seen many here but I know they are around. I rescued one out of a high sided pond a couple of years ago and it shat all over me! Talk about a stink....... pe-ew! _________________ Licking this cane toad was the worst flippin idea you.............whoa man that penguin just put something in your pocket. |

Saw one last summer that had been tragically killed in a hay bailer, it was well over 3.5 feet long and about 2" thick, but i have found similar sized ones. Wierdly they are also Jersey's rarest reptile, probably habitat loss.
It's not easy, but you can get bored of seeing Green Lizards, they are everywhere, even found a baby one in the middle of town, it was a bit squashed, and may have arrived on the sole of someone's shoe but it was still in town

Would love to see green lizards in the wild, I get common lizards in my garden and they are beautiful enough but I love greens. Apparently the British grass snake record is somewhere around 5ft in length! Thats HUUUUUGE! I have a fantastic Greek Wall Lizard, he arrived with some pottery! These pics don't show his orange throat. _________________ Licking this cane toad was the worst flippin idea you.............whoa man that penguin just put something in your pocket. |
