Since producing the tailess rat a few months ago I have been looking at any other unusual mutations. I managed to buy some Bald rats over in Holland and have since produced many balds and rex haired rats. Well this week I found two 'dumbo' rex rats in my stock. These were produced from the bald strain, obviously a hidden gene in the founder stock as I haven't added any other lines of rats into my colony since the baldies.

Dumbo's are normal in everyway except their ears are much lower down the sides of their heads rather than on top like a normal rat. Easy to over look at first but once you see one you can spot them straight away.

Anyway the dumbo is now going to be added to the tailess rat project, I am aiming for a tailess, dumbo, rex haired black & white rat....going to name them Panda Rats.... Laughing

Although it is possible to produce tailless dumbos, the genes do appear to be quite closely linked, so it would take a great amount of luck, not just the ratios you'd expect from Mendelian inheritance.

The other thing with dumbo is that breeding dumbo x dumbo, especially over multiple generations, tends to give you smaller and smaller rats with less tone (more "flabby" and less muscle), so you'd be well advised to keep some top ears in there as well as the dumbos!

Gotta love those dumbos Smile

thanks Toyah,

The tailess rat took a few while to get to breed, she went months with producing nothing and has finally had two litters, both containing 3 young. I will out bred some and inbred the others to get the tailess gene expressed in a few more, once that's established I will work one line with the dumbos and one without, then I'll work on the colours.

not sure how long all this will take but it certainly makes keeping and breeding the rat colony a bit more interesting.

Dumbo is recessive
Hairless is also recessive, so hairless x normal would give normals all carrying hairless.
