Right..
I would like for somebody that knows anything about genetics to help me here..
I have 1.1 Vipera a. ammodytes that have been breeding several times, they are both gray as groundcolour and have darkgray/black zigzags on their backs. Both looking as the species should do from the location that they are from. I had cluthces from them 3 or 4 times, and all the juveniles have been looking as the parents, ofcourse with some individual differances. Only one of the young ones came out totally different. Black and white instead of gray.
How is that possible? And what is the morph, if it is to be counted for as one?
Here´s a couple of pictures, just to show you the differance between the black/white offspring (known as "Zok") and the parents..
Here is tha male..
.. and here is the female.
Introducing... "Zok"..
Zok are also a proud father. I wanted to try the gene, just to see what would happen if I used him as a male in a breedingproject. The female is yellowish.
This is what came out:

I'd be tempted to say you hatched out an axanthic _________________ Regards James Stroud |

Thanks..
And just because I really suck at all kind of geneology/morphology, I have to ask you one thing. Why would he be Axanthic? In other words, please define what is..
How do you "create" an Axanthic? _________________ *** Miqe ***

As far as I'm aware, you'll be much safer asking the 'morph' lovers, but I think its the absence of all colour pigments in the scales bar melanin (black pigment). This will leave, theoretically, a black and white (all pigment absent) patternation _________________ Regards James Stroud |

Ahaa.. Thanks..
Is it not strange that this is the only one looking like this? I wonder if the parents are the carrier of the gene, and that they ofcourse have the allele in the same place. Or if this specimen has a mutated gene in itself. This males offspring are in many ways looking like him, so the gene can be passed on. _________________ *** Miqe ***

It could be an Axanthic but as Axanthic means ''lacking yellow'' and the parents are black and grey it seems strange? The axanthic gene is recessive so if the parents were possible gene carriers 1 in 4 offspring should turn out Axanthic - what are the clutch sizes for this species?
Alternatively you may have had a spontaneous mutation - this is completely random and very uncommon although I have had it happen in the past.
I guess only time will tell - raise the baby and breed back to the parents and see if you get more black and white babies.
Good luck with this project. |
