split my flightless fruit fly culture into 4 seperate cultures last week, went to use one of the cultures i put together, and got swarmed by hundreds of the things, can anyone tell me how they have reverted back to flying and if its possible to revert the same culture back to flightless or do i need to give up and try again, got a feeling if i dont do something the girlfriends gonna start divorce procedings, she just doesnt appreciate fruit flies with her corn flakes |

Hi mattie,
I am afraid you will have to start again with new cultures.
This happens occasionally as the flying gene is stronger than the flightless (technical description ).
This means that after the cultures have been going for a while, and especially if you have been setting up new cultures from a single one for a while, they will revert to the natural type. |

I was thinking of that too, some venus fly traps or something
Or get a cham in a felxarium in the room so if they fly in there he gets to eat them lol maybe cheaper for the plants though lol _________________ Kieron

buy a jar of baBy fruit puree food, eat half of it, yummy, leave jar out, flies will go into the jar for a munch then quickly screw lid back on! Feed ofF by releasing in tank or viv etc. _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

Adding "new blood" to an existing culture wont fix the problem.
Starting new cultures from new blood will reduce it.
I normally start using new flies about 1 month and i don't mix the 2 (old with new).
also mixing strains will cause flyer's to appear. _________________ Paul
