I thought I'd post up the sexes of some Red Ackies I kept and some that I sold in trios. There is speculation that ackies sex themselves depending on groups they are in, ie 2 turn out 1.1, 3 turn out 1.2 or 2.1, never just two males etc.

Well here's my findings so far.

My own red ackies,
4 = after 1 year turned out 4 females
4 = 1male 3 females
2 = 1.1
3 = 1.2
3 = 1.2

Red Ackies I sold,
3 = 1.2
3 = 1.2 (not confirmed)

Obviously this isn't scientific but still interesting.

Anyone else had young together unsexed and then able to sex them later?

Well virtually every day i see him pinning down and trying to mate with 3 of the females, but they just constantly wriggle to get away, and ive never seen him try it with the big female until last week where i caught them at it and she was accepting so hopefully there will be eggs soon.

Well that female has just laid 3 eggs, she laid 1 egg on friday, 2 on saturday and seems like she still has more inside her.It seems like she is not happy with the nesting sites in the viv for her not to lay the whole clutch.I'll post up if there are anymore.

what have you got as a nest box?

I use a deep ice cream tub filled with damp peat (about 9" deep).

Im using a plastic tub about 18"x10" filled with top soil (from garden center) mixed with a little sand compacted down hard with a top layer of sphagnum moss filled about 10"deep and access at the top.The female does burrow right to the bottom but lays her eggs on the top like one at a time Confused

sounds like she is definately not happy with something. check the temp at the bottom of the tub, you wan't it a little cooler than the top of the tub (that way she can choose how far down to dig and lay them)
