Hi Paul,

I used to have the black form.

I have translated the German book on oxycephala in the "Art fur Art" series if that may be of use.

Cheers

Mark

Hi Mark, Dan & Paul,

have you ever tested them on lung worms (pentastomidae)?

According to Andreas Gumprecht ("Art für Art"-series) this seems to be the crucial problem with G. jansenii.

An acquaintance of mine had G. jansenii (wc) for 5 years. He reported, he had 4 clutches during that time.
Some of the juveniles refused to eat after 1 yr. and died, probably of lung worms (it wasn't examined). After 5 yrs. the adult female died of lung worms!

Gumprecht says that the treatment* of pentastomidae bears a high risk because it's quite tough to find the right dose.

Best wishes

Jürgen

Hi Jürgen,

I cannot comment on pentastomids. Having translated Gumprechts article, I am aware of the pentastomid problem. I did not however experience this problem. My "black" janseni were allegedly long term/captive bred but were plagued with dorsal abscesses and finally succumbed. I have had some "minor" success with G. oxycephalla, with both ltc and c/b stroke c/h.

The treatment of Pentastomids is, I believe, very tricky. They need very high (lethal) chemical doses and /or surgical intervention and pentastomids are not species specific... making them a hazard for humans... something to be aware of.

Regards

Mark

Hi Mark,

good you've mentioned the potential fatal effects to humans!
Gumprecht calls the pentastomids a 'Super-Gau', a nuclear disaster, because the chances to get rid of those nasty worms without killing the snake are extremely low!

So all those ugly facts should be seriously considered before one decides to keep G. jansenii.

G'night

Jürgen
