I have heard of monitors doing this with certain food, it's too kill the food I think, and perhaps the wriggly-ness of the waxy means the bluey wants to kill it?

Most of the larger skinks, like blue tongues and shinglebacks, will do this. I guess its mainly because they are so slow they have to make sure the prey item is dead before swallowing, because if it 'got away' in the wild there wouldn't be much of a chance to catch it again. Funny watching shinglebacks do it with pre-killed pinkies, they go on for ages Cool
