Thought I would start a new thread seeing as we started about this on the Argentine boas thread, Stuart, or anyone else that knows, Is photography THAT expensive? I know nothing about it but a combination of seeing some of the photography on this forum (which is increasing in quality all the time) and constantly finding myself thinking "I wish I had a camera now" is making me wish that I had a decent camera. I have heard you joking Stuart that photography is even more expensive than reptiles. Well, is it?
If say for example, NEXT YEAR, I wanted a decent camera/lenses, what would I need to spend?

(and I have read your signature Stuart!) Smile

Confused MMm where to start! All depends how much you want to spend..If you are looking at an entry level dslr you could choose the d70s or the canon 350..both excellent cameras and should do pretty much anything you ask from them unless you turn pro very quickly!!..there are some great deals on them if you shop around. Both can be had with a standard kit lens then you can add to this with various other lenses accessories etc to suit your needs..most people go for a macro lens straight away and there are various available ranging from £200-600..if you are on a budget then third party manufacturers like sigma make some stunning alternatives to nikon and canons own lenses..then there is the cost of a decent tripod and head, filters external flashes etc.Prime lenses(fixed focal lengths) can set you back £100-5000 upwards..but most will opt for a decent zoom say a 70-200mm or 70-300mm a dedicated macro say a 105mm or 150mm and a 28-70 or for a wider angle 18-70mm..this will cover most peoples needs but at the end of the day its down to the individual to decide what they will get most use from.It can get very very expensive very quickly.Having said that you can set yourself up with a decent kit for well under a grand.

Thanks Stuart. Will never become a pro! But would love to (always have done) be able to take decent pics of my animals and the stuff I see when I go walking, (which I`ve chatted to you about before). The pictures would be mainly for me to look back on as well as share on the forum.
Under a grand would be the one for me. Does one pay for names in photography Stu? Question

TBH to a degree yes...some of the nikon ,canon lenses are very very expensive compared to 3rd party manufacturers such as sigma which to the likes of me and you produce almost as good quality...unless it is your living i would always recommend looking at other lenses by sigma, tamron, tokina etc..I remember paying well over £500 for my first digital camera,a sony cybershot, which was great but now for that money you could get a nice d70 or 350 canon..and you can pick the additional lenses up at decent prices too.
