I have a trio of adult bearded dragons, one male and two females. I dont have a lot of experience with reptiles, I have only had leo geckos before and I've had these dragons for just over six months, I took them from a guy who was going to give them to an animal shelter otherwise. I'm toying with the idea of breeding them, they are all now a year old. I was wondering if it was safe to keep the male in with the females, as i've heard a lot of lizards need particular conditions (reduced light and heat etc) to breed, is this true of beardies as i don't want them to breed until I am ready, also don't want the females being bred too often? When a female is gravid what sort of extra nutrition should she be getting, and what sort of stuff do you guys use as incubators, do you have specialist reptile incubators etc? When the beardies hatch, are they all safe to be in the same tank, or do they have to be segregated, and if so, how in the world do you manage to provide them all with UV lighting???

Hi,
lots of questions.lol
OK, firstly I wouldn't recommend you breed them unless you are sure you can find homes for them all (it costs alot to rear them up to a suitable size).
If you do decide to breed then you will need to provide a nesting box filled with damp sand / vermiculite, I use vermiculite. The nest box needs to be at least 4" deep (deeper the better). The eggs will then need to be incubated at around 28c and will take between 75 and 95 days to hatch.
You don't need to do anything to get your dragons to breed but lowing the night temps will help. Beardies will normally breed when they are ready no matter what you have done.
Once the female starts laying eggs you will get a clutch every month or so (up to 4 - 5 clutches). If you can't handle that many eggs, you should destroy them when they are first laid.
When they hatch, you wuill need to house them in groups of 5 - 10 depending on cage size. I use large tubs will a UV light above.
Will post some photos tomorrow.
Hope that helps a little |
