I have had my supposedly male red-sided garter snake (Helix) for seven years, and now he drops a bombshell on us. He is a she and has given birth to two babies!! One was still born but the other is very much alive.

She has been on her own for seven years, so I am baffled on how this could happen, is there any history of garter snakes giving birth years after mating?

Also what should I do with the baby, it is in the cage with the mum at the moment and they are curled up under a log together.
Should I seperate them?
What should I feed it and when?
Also how old can it be when it can be rehomed?

Thanks in advance for the help!

There have been a few reports of snakes and lizards that have NEVER been with another reptile and have laid eggs or given birth

There was an iguana in one of the Reptiles magazine that had never been in with any other reptile and she laid a few eggs which hatched (I think ) Shocked
She was housed in a university lab in the US, so all the details were noted and a paper written on it.
I also vaguely remembering a rattlesnake which gave birth to a few neonates, this one from memory had not been with a male for 5-6 years Shocked ...super sperm Razz Razz

yep, I've heard quite a few examples of females producing young after a good number of years without a male.
