Got myself some black velvet today (£8.95 a square meter!!) to use as backdrop..also thought I would try out the new lumiquest softbox diffuser on the flash..quite pleased although need to try out some different ositions with the flash..these were all taken with flash hand held off to one side..

Really pleased with the velvet it certainly absorbs the light well if you want a black background..tried it on the pines as well..

Haven't had to alter pic at all to get this just carefull positioning of the flash..

cool effect mate,i do like black as a backdrop and the overall 'blackness' of the velvet does a great job Wink i always use a black cotton t-shirt but it doesnt quite give the 'blackhole'effect Very Happy i cant quite think of the words to describe how i like the effect so im leaving it at that Laughing nice word mate Wink

Laughing @ Karen..Thanks Jess.. Wink
Ta Jamie..I used to use black card but if you get it wrong or the subject is too close to the background it comes out grey with harsh shadows as well..Pleased with the soft box it does its job well on smaller subjects..

I've seen black velvet used to good effect as well. Its the best stuff I know to get these very black backgrounds.

Certainly is Ron...but even using this you can still see it if you don't aim the flash correctly.

Nice one Stuart, looks like we have both been experiementing with black backgrounds at the same time, lol. I love this set, especialy the ones on the actual flower. I use card too and I know what you mean re it showing up grey, it can be very annoying.
I quite fancy getting a little lightbox for use with white backgrounds - have you used these?
