I really feel for you mate and don't know what to say except that at least you know in your heart that you gave them a quality life and i'm sure they had a nice one, as much as they gave you enjoyment.
Once you have come to terms with it as best you can, I would start investigating the matter with the electricity company, to see if this was something they were tampering around with, because i'm sure that somewhere along the line, they would have to notify locals of these such events, to avoid issues.
