Think this thread is starting to get a bit far from the original subject, but a very interesting discussion never the less.
OK, it takes 10 years for a tort to reach sexual maturity (if I remember correctly). If the first generation is WC, this produces a Captive Farmed generation that then need to reach sexual maturity. These then produce young which are Captive Bred. Can these then be sold or do they need to produce another generation of Captive Bred which can then be sold ? Either way not a short term investment, unless you buy in Captive Bred stock in the first place to start everything off.
How long have some of these farms in Slovenia been running ? I read a report when we first bought our torts 10 years ago that Slovenia did not in fact have a captive breeding program. OK, this report was from the TT, and they were trying to work out exactly where these animals really came from. |

If you have CITIES paperwork for any tortoises you own, whatever the origin it should be legal to sell the young. About 7 years ago I started buying and growing on some young Hermanns. Last year they were seen mating for the first time and several females seem large enough to produce eggs. It's a very long term project !! Not something that I could imagine many big scale breeders doing. To be commercial you would need to invest a lot of money and wait along time for payback.
The irony is that some of my stock are from Slovenia !! |

i don't think we'll ever know the truth about the whole wild caught thing,
like i said before by buying one, you're funding them but if you can give a tortoise a good home then does it really matter? the only main worry is the herpes virus which could infect the rest of your tortoises.
i'm not for it but i'm not totally against it.
in marginated tortoise territory, the farmers absolutely hate them and dispose of them whenever they can, .. margies are absolute greedy pigs.
to put it in another perspective, would it be better for that tortoise to become a loved pet in a nice familys garden or probably end up being ploughed into the field by the farmer that hates it?
my wild caught leopard deserves to be in africa right now, by the waterhole grazing and basking. but it ended up in a pet shop.
i knew she was wild caught when i saw her at the reptile shop but she was such a nice tort, great shell, healthy eyes and a bit of a character to watch, .. i just thought i could give her a better home that someone else could.
here is a pic of her this was the day i got her, she was and still is really shy.
wild caught isn't all bad really, they deserve a chance too!! _________________ 1.2.0. Geochelone pardalis
