I have been thinking of getting a Bearded dragon for ages, I am new to captive bred as you can see.
I just popped onto the bearded dragons part of captive bred, when I saw things about Rankins dragons. As I am new to reptiles I have never heard of Rankins dragons before. When I saw a picture of one I thought they look near enough identical.

So, my question is, apart from the name, what is the differance between a Rankins Dragon and a Beardie?

I am also looking to get a Beardie as my first lizard, what would I be better of with a Rankins or Beardie?

Hi Daniel,

SIZE is the main difference, Rankins are half the size to beardeds.

This makes a big difference to keeping them as Rankins consume less food, they work out far cheaper than beardeds to keep.

As for what one to go for, they are both the same in terms of husbandary, I would happily recommend either to a novice keeper.

Hiya,

Don't know if this is too late but we have bought our beardie and the set up today and it was £240 for the beardie, viv, lamp, heat pad, moss, wood, water bowl , UV lamp, thermometer and the gravelly stuff!

Dunno how much help this might be, bought my beardie bout a month ago and the wholde set up cost me £175.

That included:
8" female lime phase beardie
3'x1'x1' viv with light fitting and vents
spot bulb and 18" uv bulb (reptiglo) with starter and fitting
water and food bowls
cork wood hide, granite basking rock and mopani wood branch
2x bags of calcisand substrate
nutrobal food supplement
1x box brown crickets

Also bought an 8" male 2 weeks later for another £40.

All this was from Wharf Aquatics at Pinxton, Notts (see breeders/suppliers section).
