how productive is a wax worm culture, say i started with 250 wax worms, what would i be hoping to produce from that?

A lot! I did the same and got hundreds of tiny waxies, unfortunately I split the culture into crix tubs and it didn't do them any good. The culture dried up and most of the little ones died in the culture. I'll post up a how to thread later in the week as until I split the cultures it was going really well Cool

My tub is looking pretty crap now.

A few moths appeared and died not too long after, probably about 10 moths out of about 250 worms which I was pretty pissed about.

Thinking its going to be easier to just buy them when I need them!

Leaving the tub as it is in case SOME appear, but I doubt they will.

My tub seems to be doing alright still.

I find they seem to run out of food pretty fast! I made a big sticky ball of food recently. Weetabix, porridge oats, honey, warm water and some CGD. Seemed to keep them going for a while.

They are pretty messy buggers leaving silk wherever they go, it builds up ridiculously fast. I also found they escape no problems when they're hungry Evil or Very Mad

Escape holes

The escapees, I found these all over the tights that were supposed to keep them in Smile

Hey mate, did you not find that when the new waxies had hatched and started to climb about that they managed to climb right up to the tights and chew holes in them to escape? That's what mine did Shocked

Laughing

It's odd though, they don't seem to crawl away from the container and go for a wander, just crawl on top of it. So they get out, but don't actually make a run for it

Hows it going?

Mould got into mine, I dont think it was ventillated well enough, so I didnt get a single waxie.

I plan to start a new culture, reading every possible caresheet on breeding them.

Fingers crossed!!

Did you remove the dead moths once they died? Or leave them in there?

Cheers

Hi gary sorry for the delayed reply, I just left the death moths in there though. I didn't get any mould problems, my medium was quite dry though, very crumbly but slightly sticky
