I've just finished my naturalistic vivaria for my beautiful Auratus from MJ and have found that mould has started to grow on the wood. I now have to strip the tank and redo the background
What kind of wood do you recommend for my second time of trying...?

IMO mould on the wood is normal in new setups, part of the cycling of the viv as such where the humidity increases.
It usually dies off after a week or so so I wouldn't strip it out just yet, maybe increase the air circulation if it persists. _________________ Bill |

Perfectly normal as Bill and tam said
What kind of wood have you got in the viv? if you want to rid the viv of mold faster than it wants to cycle ( I normally leave it since it ony lasts a few days or so) just spray it with some peat water. _________________ Paul

Well to be honest, I can't really make the air flow any better as the tank doesnt actually have a front yet...
It's wood i found in my local forest.
Oh, and what is peat water? |

peat water is peat moss + water
1 litre of water and a handfull or 2 of the peat moss (also called irsh peat moss) let sit for a couple days.
did you steralize the wood before use?
I dont know if its hard or soft wood so cant really give a guess on how well it will do in a viv mate, if it's Oak you're golden _________________ Paul

If it's the same white stuff that grows in my new vivs then I bet it'll be gone in a week. I'm pretty poor on the identification of fungi, but maybe you have some pics? Anyway, I'd say don;t panic and see how it goes.... _________________

Jake, have you got springtail and tropical woodlice in there yet? If not, throw a load in, they eat the mould etc.

No i havent actually. Sounds like a good idea. I'll try it.
It does actually seem to be clearing up today...I'm pretty chuffed with it to be honest. I'll post pictures later.
Does the light from full spectrum/plant-gro bulbs go through glass? |
