I'm getting an Okeetee Corn Snake but I want an Abbots Okeetee. When I went to my local reptile shop I told him what morph I wanted (abbots okeetee) and when he would get them in. He said an Abbots Okeetee is proberbly just a normal Okeetee but a person bred them and the babies and named it after themself, making an Abbots Okeetee. Is this true? Because I've looked at different morphs on the internet and books and an Abbots Okeetee looks different to an Okeetee.
Need answers please!

The second image is an Okeetee, the black bands are thicker than normal and the colours and patches are defined. I am not sure what the one in the first picture is other than a rather pretty corn.

The naming of morphs is rather a haphazzard business, and is getting a little out of hand if you ask me as their us no set nominacilture as with the species so people can name some what they want and in some countries these can even be different.

Unfortunately some people name thigs as a morph too, to gaina bit of extra cash.

Okeetee is a confusing label. It can refer to two different things:

1. ("hunt club") Okeetee is a locality corn snake - normally they have thick black bands, bright background, but they're descended from corns caught in a particular place so not all look exactly as you'd imagine. They can vary from the very thick black bands to the one like the snake you pictured. All offspring of two Okeetee locality corns will be Okeetee locality corns whatever they look like, same as two Hogg Island boas will only produce Hogg Island boa offspring - even if a baby is not very pretty, the blood is the same!

2. Okeetee is a look of corn snake - a normal bred for thick black bands, and a bright background colour. They may or may not have locality blood to them, but all that's important is the look. Mating two Okeetee corn snakes together could give you a variety of looks, but only the ones with thick black bands and a bright background colour can really be called Okeetee.

3. (Abbott's) Okeetee is a line of corn snakes, developed by Lee Abbott. These are extreme versions of Okeetees, with huge amounts of black banding, almost to the point where some of the rear saddles are pure black with no red in the centre. Only corns descended from Lee Abbott's bloodline should be called Abbott's Okeetees.

In the UK when people say Okeetee they normally mean the second option above - a corn snake specifically linebred for a look, rather than a locality animal. Abbott's Okeetees are rare in the UK at the moment but there'll be lots of them here soon enough via imports.

Brilliant answer Toyah, spot on. The same could be said for 'Miami' or 'Carolina' Corns too. Most morphs have very little to nothing to do with locality bloodlines - whence the name originally came from.

For those people breeding for looks, then it doesn't matter but the names can be misleading.

A good point about having potential offspring from a specific locality that may not inherit the visual traits that are archetypal to the region of the parent animals.

That said, Okeetee's are one of the few morphs that really appeal to me, those Abbotts are very nice too. Smile
