What are dew claws on dogs and why are they removed?
Anyone know what affects there are leaving them or having them removed?
thanks _________________

The dew claw is the vestigal first digit (sort of where our thumb would be... its the most medial digit) and is normally only present on the thoracic limbs (although are present on the pelvic limbs of some breeds)
They are normally removed from pups with the aim of preventing injuries, as they can get caught on things, damaging easily. they are not weight bearing, nor really used for much (although my terriers tend to use them a lot when holding toys down to bite them!)
Does that help? _________________ Interested in amphibians? Join us at Myamphibia for friendly banter, amazing pictures and great information. Make some amphibious friends today! |

My Jack Russell uses hers a lot to pining things down and scratching me to pieces when I'm playing with her.
I didn't realise you can have them removed. _________________

I kind of guessed that's what they were and was also surprised to find puppies advertised with them removed. Thanks for the quick answers _________________

No worries. You'll often see pups advertised without them, it used to be done at the same age as docking was. Its just another one of these surgical interventions to prevent distresing injury... whether or not you want them removed depends on weighing up the chances of your dog sustaining an injury.
If your planning on showing the dog, bare in mind that some breed standards may require that the dogs have dew claws (more prevalent in rear dew clawed breeds) _________________ Interested in amphibians?
