Hi, I am thinking of building my own viv, I am going to buy a corn snake or a royal python. The dimensions I am thinking of are 4ft x 2ft x 2ft. The problem is I dont know what wood to use or where to get runners for them. Can anyone give me a rough estimation of how much the wood would be to buy for these dimesions. Thanks Very Happy

If you use conti board from homebase etc..you could quite easily purchase the wood for a 4x2x2 for under £30.Are you getting a baby or adult snake as a 4x2x2 wouldn't be ideal for a juvenile of either of the species you mention.

Baby snakes prefer the security of a small cage, but if you set the 4ft up correctly with plenty of hides, the right temps AND you buy a good quality snake that is well started, you probably will be fine with the larger viv.

The worst problem for a big cage is the baby snake 'seems' lost in it, they sometimes go off their food (more applicable to Royal pythons than corns).

alternatively you could build the large cage ready for when the snake grows and then place a small plastic cage inside (at the right temp) and keep the snake in there awhile until it grows up a little.

that's a good size for an adult corn but a baby still might feel lost in it. babies are best reared in tubs 12" x 6" x 4".

If you wanted to put a snake straight into that size viv, just buy a yearling corn snake and you should be fine.

Contiboard comes in 18 and 24 inch, you will save work if you make the viv 18 inches deep ie. front to back. If you don't mind woodwork, by all means stick to 20 inches.
Work out sizes before you go to Homebase and they will cut it accurately to dimensions given. The boards are 8 feet long.

There is a good website DIY page for viv building to give you some tips
