they get pretty big and you are going to need a viv at least 5 foot long _________________ Tom

The reds and also the black and whites usually become very tame indeed. The goldens can remain nervous and even aggressive..if you are getting ababy it may be skittish but they normally calm down very quickly with regular handling..make sure you support them very well as most hate being lifted off the ground, mine does anyway.. _________________

I have 2 tegus and they are my favourite "pet" lizard Black & White argentines (T.merianae) and reds (T.rufescens) will need 8ft vivs (or around 24sqft of floorspace) when they are fully grown, as they can max out at around 5ft, but they are generally very mellow as adults. Baby tegus can be very nervous (as already mentioned), but as they get older and larger they can become more confident. Plenty of interaction with them as they grow should ensure that they are happy around people - they have a better reputation as a larger "pet" lizard than many other, more popular, species.
Have a look at some of the vids on www.thetegu.com - you may have to search back through some of the older posts. They can become quite tame, but, like all animals, they can have their "off-days". I have a 4ft adult who is usually lovely, but who can occasionally have his moments - usually when free-roaming outside. I wouldnt ever want to be without them though.
I have a caresheet on my site - www.freewebs.com/johelian , if its any help |
