It is a new guinea carpet no doubt about it, as with Morelia spilota variegata named because it is so variable and its distribution ranges from the Kimberlery District of Northen Western Australia to Papa New Guinea and Irian Jaya, and due to polymorphic geographical distribution, its colours vary greatly over the range, Irian Jayas are typical red black and cream, new guineas usually cream and black, and the australian variant is Grey and Black, all due to the habitat in which they occur.

You cannot tell a cross or hybrid or even species by colour alone, head shape and structure, and scale counts clarify it is certainly variegata, and the colour indicates new guinea variant.

However true new guineas have a slighter more slender arrowshape head compared to mcdowelli, cheynei, spilota and even compared to its relatives on mainland australia.

Green Tree Pythons are the prime example of this, head shape and colour usually indicate locale.

There is no doubt whatsoever this is a New Guinea carpet python, if you know your carpets you can plainly see this (no offence John C) and it is certainly not a hybrid, scale counts would indicate a hybrid a mile away as would the shape of the head, pre-ocular and upper labials are a dead give away of hybrids, the nasal scales are one of the best ways to determine a hybrid, as in all recognised carpet species the nasal scale shape differs in species.

Dorsal scale counts on carpets cannot identify the species as all carpets have similar dorsal counts, and all dorsal counts do is identify it as a carpet.

I have had many carpet hybrids in the past, and if you know your carpets you can spot them a mile away.

Again the colour variant of this variegata indicates new guinea, as this colour variant has not yet been found on irian jaya or australia.

A stunning snake ross, all we need to do is find a female. Most people out there whom believe they have new guineas have nothing more than plain variants of variegata from Australia, as these are much duller in colour and certainly do not have the brilliant cream colouring in which most new guineas have.

The colour variants occur from the habitat in which they come from, and the foilage.

It still amazes me the natural colour morphs of this species over its extensive range.

Hoser tried to re-classify this species under a dodgy name and name them west papuans . . . .LMAO. . . the only reason he gave for renaming it was because the one he got his hands from was a new localityy, so Hoser being Hoser and not being able to grasp the ability of Taxonomy tries to rename it.

An example would be renaming the corn snake, giving it a different taxonomic name for every state it is found.

I am glad he is settling in well mate.

I am working on trying to locate an equally nice female, pity Karl would not sell his lol.

I will contact the breeder (whom I am not going to name, because people will try and bring the breeder into the arguement).

Ross, yours is certainly not a hybrid!!!!
