These turtles are great. I don't have long term experience, but I do have a trio. I've had the two females for about a year and picked up the male in Hamm in March. The male has been mating or at least starting to try recently, so I'm hopeful for the new year...

I ain't going to write a caresheet, but fire away if you have any questions.

Hi; please bear in mind that these are semi-aquatic WOOD turtles, not an aquatic species.

My set up for three sub-adults is an aquarium 36" x 18" x 18". I have a piece of perspex for a cover, with air holes drilled in.

I have about 4" of bark chips as a substrate, with a small cat litter type tray containing a couple of inches of water. Thus about 1/3 is shallow water and 2/3 is 'forest floor' I have loads of hanging plastic plants around the glass, to create a forest feel.

I have a heat mat on a stat under half the tank 24/7, and an overhead basking spot during the day. These guys do bask, but only if they don't feel exposed. I had to surround this area with plastic plants before they started using it. I have mixed a few handfuls of potting soil in with the chips. This makes the water a dirty brown ALL the time, but they seem to like it that way!

These guys have quite quickly outgrown this tank. I'm now looking at a 4 x 2 x 2 tank...

Mark.

I should have said that the best thing about keeping these turtles is feeding time. They are voracious and eat anything!

I feed mine on greens (dandelions or other), veg (peas, sweetcorn, carrots etc), fruit (grapes, blueberries, banana, strawbs etc), cat/dog food, pre-soaked box turtle pellets, pre-soaked fish food, f/t diced turkey, snails etc etc. I try to keep the greens as the majority item.

Anyone had any joy with breeding these? I've had two females since autumn 04. Added a male in spring 05. The male has been attempting copulation since the autumn, but no sign of any eggs yet...
