It is hard to put an exact age, size of the tortoise is a factor, however a large number of captive bred torts grow too quickly.
As with many animals, young males will try to mate given the chance, I have heard of females of 5 or 6 years of age, but I would say this is too young and not in the best interests of the tortoise. I personally would not place a young female tort below the age of 10 years, into a breeding situation...

What tortoises do you keep?...T.T. Cool

aidan, It is very difficult to sex torts at that age, a young male may start to mount another tort, but the other tort could also be a male, could be a dominance trial?
Male tails are much longer than females, although some females have long tails too, but they are still far too young at the moment to be breeding Wink ...T.T. Cool
