Forgive my ignorance, but I thought you couldnt use a heat mat without a thermostat?! How else can you control temp? |
depends what you want to achieve by using the mat, but yes overall ALL heat sources should have thermostatic control. _________________

With regards to heat pads and the carpet, well I'm with Karen, dump the heat mat and use just spot light for heat, on a dimming thermostat.
At night I would use NOTHING, let the temp drop to your house room temp.
I even do this during the winter although I must admit the temp doesn't drop below 16c in my room. _________________

Thanks Scott. I did stop using the heat mat, as Karen suggested, and now only use the spot light (I use it with a dimming stat - I've never used any heat source without a stat, just wouldn't chance it!)
Don't think the mat was making much difference to the temps anyway, so there really was no need for both in the tank. I now use lino in the tank, instead of the cage carpet - much easier to clean, and it doesn't seem to hold the smell, like the carpet did.
