Hi Everyone,

I'm not 100% sure where this should go, but in the room description it does say about equipment so I thought this would be the best.

I'm trying to persuade my parents to let me get a Bearded Dragon at the moment, I'll be making my own vivarium, and know where I can get pretty much everything, I do have a UV light which I can use (A long thin one which would cover quite a lot). However, for the basking spot I was going to use a ZooMed Powersun Light, I've seen that it says that it emits UV as well, so would this mean that the UV tube wouldn't be needed in the vivarium?

If u use the powersun as basking-spot there is no need to use another uvb supply. The powersun will give sufficient UVB to your beardies.

The Powersun cannot be thermostatically controlled so it needs to be in a large vivarium so that overheating is avoided.
A bigger space than is normally given to beardies.

Should I end up doing this, the vivarium will be 4'x2'x2', there will also be quite a lot of air vents in use... Is that not big enough? And if not, have you got any other reccomendations?

In a viv that size i would use a 10.0 UVb tube or 10.0 UVBcompact (arcadia) lamp in stead of a UVb-heat lamp. And for heating/basking purpose some normal 40/60 watt spots. Saves you a Lot of money (for buying the spots and electricity)!

And i've you can spend some money and would like to buy a good UVb lamp u can buy a megaray. The 60w version will give more UVb then the powersun 100w. And will not be that hot. because it is external ballasted. I use the 100w version and it gives very good UVb, also after a while.

This says that it gives UVA rays as well as providing the heat. And would 40-60 Watts apply for all spot lights to give the correct temperatures for Beardies?

You need UVB, not UVA.
Fluorescent tube is the best way fo UVB, if it is too expensive then hold off until you can afford it.

The money thing was about that particular light, as Martijn said, if there was money available to buy that light then that would be the best one to get, but there are other ways around it (As he told me about earlier).

And I didn't realise that there was different UV types, many caresheets just say UV, so I thought that when it said UVA in the light description, I though that was just the full abbreviation of UV.

I do already have a UV tube, from a former aquarium, but I was just seeing if there was any way round having that in the vivarium...

The UV fluorescent tube for a beardie should be 10% UVB.
The fish tank one you have may be less.
You are best with a 3 foot long one.
