Im getting a pair of Rankins just after Christmas, and was just wondering what people would recommend for the ceramic heater.

A pulse thermostat or dimming thermostat (im thinking along the lines of the Habistat range)

Cheers

I always prefer dimming stats for basking lizards and I also try and use a low wattage bulb / ceramic that can stay on longer, rather than a high powered one that the dimming / pulse turns off for most of the day, giving the lizard nowhere to bask.

Is there a preference with the dimming or pulse thermostats?

From what I can understand they more or less do the same job, which is the better one for the job and what wattage ceramic heater would you recommend?

Cheers

I use a Mat Stat by Hadistat with a 100w ceramic as a background warmer plus a 60w reflective bulb to provide basking area. This combination keeps the background temp stable and allows for a 110 - 115 degree basking spot.

Put the cermic about 3/4 of the way to the basking side so a cooler zone will be available at the other end allowing the little guys to maintain correct temps.

Ahh ok that kinda makes sense to me Smile

Is this the recommended way of doing things, rather than going for a Dimming/Pulse Thermostat?

Cheers for the advice

Wouldn't neccesarily say that this was the recommended way but def works for me. This creates good constant background temp of 80 degree during the day (give or take a couple of degrees). I have marked my Matstat in two places that give optimal heat, one for the day and one for the night which allows the viv to cool a bit while the Beardies are asleep.

Of course when I bought my Habistst the dimming thermostats were very expensive and I was told by several breeders that a Matstat was absolutely fine and has so far not let me down.

A dimming thermostat is used for light emitting bulbs.

A pulse thermostat is used for ceramic bulbs.

A mat thermostat is crap, don't get one. I'd rather pay the extra £15 for a temperature guage on the stat.

Its more natural to have the heat coming from above, as their 'third eye' is on the top of their head - this helps them thermoregulate. Dimming stats are the best as the heat gradually changes (just like a dimming light switch), but also the dearer - day and night dimming stats are the best, as the heat can be adjusted on the night time to ensure that although the temp can drop, it does not get too low.
Pulse stats is more like a light switch, it will turn on, then off etc etc to try and maintain the temp.

Anne, your wrong.

A pulse thermostat is for ceramic heaters and adjusts the amount of pulses the ceramic heater is giving out therefore adjusting the heat.

So would a pulse stat maitain the ceramic at a cooler temp or would it pulse on at full power, then not pulse again until the temp drops below required level? (effectively flicking the ceramic on and off depending how much heat is required?)
