saw this on the bbc website, poor things! And to think they were going from England to AUSTRALIA Shocked Evil or Very Mad

Yip the Ozzie's are know to do that as it is an illegal import and the excuse used is that the animal could be carrying a harmful bug, bacteria or virus that may infect their indigenous species adversely.

It’s harsh but somewhat difficult to argue against but if the animal was to be quarantined this may solve the problem but the authorities do not want to encourage foreign animals so destroy it no questions asked.

I guess it's similar to most countries, even here they destroy some animals that arrive illegally or even with paperwork errors, others though are passed on to private or zoo collections.

People found guilty of smuggling wildlife into the country face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 110,000 Australian dollars ($92,700; £46,700).

No kidding around down there.
