Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside!

An unrealted UK CB young pair of three banded dillos.

They are so cool they even walk on tip toe! Fascinating and amazing and extremly strong considering their small size.

I will do some better pics when less tired.

They are a tad unusual and do require precise care and most importantly the correct diet, especially important from what I have learnt if they are to breed successfully.

The female will have three babies per year and just one baby per quarter. Gestation time is 120 days then two weeks after giving birth she is receptive again for just one day. If she has been well feed and fed correctly she will produce milk. Four weeks after mating if her body is producing enough potential milk the embryo will be sustained and become viable, if not then the mother will re-absorb the embryo.

Before giving birth the male needs to be separated from the female else he will commit infanticide. Even post birth the male should be kept well away from the baby. Apparently the females are excellent Mothers and highly protective of their babies.

The larger male is quite tame the younger female needs to be handled quite a lot. The male will unroll when handled but the female will not unroll in your hands yet, but in time she may well do if handled enough. I have also been told by the person whom I obtained them from that the male liked to play with his dog and would nudge the dog to play.

I must say I was extremely lucky to obtain these dillos and the person I got them from has a wealth of well researched and experiential knowledge regarding their captive care and breeding.
