He is coming round today , and has just asked me over the phone about their husbandry and their vitimin intake , which I didnt research, but I have just spoke to Jerry from reptile keeping, the only successful breeder in the uk, and he said he feeds hoppers, any type of fish, and pinkies, thats it !
No vitims no suppliments , no nothing ...... And he has reared the parents of these caiman from babies themselves for 14yrs and successfully bread them, so he has to be doing something right ....

crocdillians in general are amazingly resilient.
they can handle drastic temperature changes.
they will always be willing to eat what is offered whether or not they are used to eating it. they usually eat a wide variety of stuff in the wild.
with the crocodillians ive kept i usually started them out of fish only. they really liked to hunt them down. quite often id feed them in my bathtub so they could really get in a bit of swimming as well. at around 12" or so i introduced rodents which they gladly took as well. at that time i started weening them off of fish and there was never really a problem. as well as fish in the beginning every now and again i would heat up some chicken breast and they would take that well off of hemostats (which is something i cant recommend enough when dealing with crocodillians).
i found it was pretty easy to maintain temperatures once we got it going.
ive never kept them inside of fish tanks though, i always used large enclosures with a large water bowl. this way they could come out and walk around a bit instead of just giving them land to lay on. i found that they would use the land to run around quite a bit.
they make very entertaining captives to say the least. _________________ cardboard city. |

id hide the water heater underneath something unless you want your caiman to eat it. _________________ cardboard city. |

It would be easy to hide the heater inside a piece of 2in plastic piping from the plumpers merchant with a few holes drilled in it

Its just to add some moisture on the land area, they also sometimes like to cover themselves to feel safe on the outside, so thats why I have put it in there ...
Any thoughts anyone ?

I think the litres of heated water will keep it moist enough with out the sphagnum
if your looking to make them feel more secure I think a collar around the platform would work well or in this case I would say about getting some fake plants, damp sphagnum stinks and really in this kind of setup would be more trouble than its worth. _________________ Paul
