Not too sure to be honest, I do know that the females are more long lived than the males , who tend to do the "business" and then peg it. Shocked (Sod that!)

The females go on to live a lot longer and continue to lay eggs whilst the poor males are pushing up daisies.

The eggs do take a long time to hatch, I have 16 from another source incubating and probably have a good 18 months to wait!

Life span is approx: 18-20 months so quite long lived for a phasamidae.

Just thought I'd add a couple of pics of my recently moulted adult female 'doing her thing', quite unlike some of the other 'adult' females doing their 'thing' which I'm sure can be found on Google if you wish to look... Shocked

Hope you don't mind me hijacking the thread to post my own pics Peter, if you do then feel free to slap my newbie wrist and move them on! Wink

She's in defensive mode in the second and third pics in case you're not familiar with the species (getting progressively more aggressive in the final one, ready to lash out with her back legs at any unsuspecting fingers that come her way! Hurts like the proverbial too... Shocked

I was hoping you would post them Jonathan after seeing them on bug nation. Cool

Great pics, and that`s what a big female should look like. Smile

Phew, no wrist-slapping here then! Very Happy Do you guys mind Photobucket pictures by the way or should I be using another method to post pics? Apologies if that info is staring me in the face somewhere, I haven't noticed / looked for it!

I will post some pics later . I have a huge female starting to fill out after recently moulting perfectly to her adult form .

These can live for around 2 - 3 years from hatching , which is a long time for phasmids . The record is well over 3 years .

Ova however can take upto 2 years to hatch .

And as mentioned females do not live as long as the male due to the fact that they mature quicker as with most Invertebrates .

Actually, if anyone could post up a picture of an adult male also that would be great. They are totally different looking to the females. I have two but they are nowhere near maturity.

Just to confirm it`s the female of the species that is longer lived than the male. I am sure that is what Oli meant to say, just a slip of the keyboard in his post no doubt. Smile Wink

Used to keep 10 . Which is largish .

Thinned it now to 7 . Got two new females and another male at the AES in order to introduce new bloodlines . Got my first ever one from Shaz . Huge female , still with me but getting on a bit now !

I keep these with a lot of Haaniella species such as dehaanii and muelleri .
