well some of you may know that me and my dad recently finished making a rack. well i am now planning my next DIY reptile housing project. i am wanting to make a viv stack out of a bookcase. so i have a few questions.

first of all would i have to do anything to the wood to make it safe?

would i have to seal it with silicon or something?

how much is glass?

what type of glass do i use?

where can i get glass runners?

thanks in advance

thanks mate

this was the one i had in mind http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6090124/Trail/C%24cip%3D1500010971.Furniture%2Band%2Bfurnishings%3EC%24cip%3D1500011031.Storage%3EC%24cip%3D1500011039.Bookcases%2Band%2Bshelving.htm

but i think the back may be a problem, cos i will have to make big holes in it for ventilation.

its pine, but you can get it in beech, maple and oak as well

Looking at the photo in the link that you posted, I would consider how safe the shelves would be. I have bought similar shelves before and they are only supported by little pegs that fit into the sides of the case. I suppose you could drill them into place from the outside though. Then there is the fact that the book shelf is only 29cm deep. Once you have fitted a front, that will reduce the depth further. What are you looking to keep in there? I am not sure what you could keep in a viv that is just over 2ft long by less than a foot deep.
I do not suggest that I am an expert though, so you may already have some plans with regards to what you are going to keep in there. I do not want to sound too negative though, mate and this could turn out to be a very cheap solution. Having scratch-built a number of viv's myself from both MDF and furniture-board, I know how expensive they can get.
I am about to build a viv for my new Bosc monitor which is 7ft x 3ft x 3ft and I half expect it to cost me in the region of £200 once the electrics etc have been installed. If you do go ahead with this project, please post the pictures won't you?

regards, Paul.
