Wow missed this thread lol Laughing

A couple more thoughts for you though, live feeding is pretty much the norm throughout the rest of the world, but the UK seems to have it's knickers in a twist about this subject, so does that mean that all the other snake keepers around the world are wrong??

No, I don't think so, and I dont think live is the very last resort either, to me, that would be forcing....as that can be very stressful for the snake.

I think live feeding does have it's merits and a place within the hobby, it should be discussed.

Thankfully mine accept dead food though.

Recently I wrote to defra with some concerns about the AWA, part of the letter did address live feeding.

Quote:

Finally, the Protection of Animals Act 1911 to 1964 do not prohibit the feeding of animals with live prey, although the feeding of vertebrate prey should be discouraged and avoided apart from exceptional circumstances and then only under veterinary advice. Where any live prey must be used, feeding must be observed and its welfare must be considered as well as any potential injury which might be caused to the predator.

So basically reading that, it is not illegle but is discouraged Exclamation

Fair enough. Well as a conclusion, I certainly wont be changing my ways and I will ALWAYS encourage others NOT to live feed.

Amen Smile

Sorry to bring up the argument again but in the wild wouldnt snakes be feeding on live rodents and doesnt everyone think that people should be keeping their snakes as closely to their natural habitat as possible (if that makes sense) Confused

Jake

can we take it that your animals are kept in hundreds of acres of natural habitat then? Very Happy

I actually had a discussion with a large scale breeder and pet shop owner about this subject this afternoon as my son (scooter) has a couple of problem hatchlings. I asked him if he could supply live pinkies to try and 'kick start' the non feeders. he said he couldnt and wouldnt as if he was found out he could get in trouble. I was of the opinion that, unless a snakes life was in grave danger from non feeding it was illegal. the earlier qoute frfom the government document 'seems to back this up' but could be taken both ways. If it was not illegal, how could the RSPCA prosecute?

not taking sides or winding anyone up, but it would be benificial if there was some black and white on the subject, for the good of the hobby if nothing else.

some one mentioned before about it being acceptable everywhere else in the world. I have spoken to a few breeders at rep shows in florida and although it is not illegal, it is recommended and prefferable to feed F/T fro the poss snake injuries that might occur as already spoken about. tonight, scooters problem hatchlings are dining on 'brained' F/T pinkies.

Well not quite like that. But we maintain their natural temperatures, most use natural substrates and lighting to stimulate that they are wild as possible...so i see no reason to keep them on natural food, live rodents.

Just my view.
